James 1

James 1:19-21 “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters:  You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.  Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.  So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.”

This is so important as we mature in our faith because our reactions are what make people wonder about what we believe.  We need to be an example to people of what Christ has done for us so we let the Spirit lead us and we slow down how we react and react like Christ.  It is so important for us to change and work on being a new creation so we can let people see that with Christ we can do all things.  When we are learning and trying to live by the Spirit we must work on our actions constantly and not just use our words.

In verse 22 it says, “But don’t just listen to God’s word.  You must do what it says.  Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

People are watching us always when we call ourselves “Christians” so be ready to live it out and continually work at maturing, asking God to fill you with wisdom and understanding.  Doing religious things does not make us “Christian” heart change and living differently is what shows God we love Him.

I love verse 26 which says, “If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.”

You will not be helping the Kingdom of Heaven and you will cause people to stumble.

Verse 27 says, “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”

I pray for God to give us the strength to see past the world and all its selfish ways and for us to be slow to react to our emotions and truly let Him lead.  We need to seek God and work on living a way that looks like the example God gave us with Christ.  We can’t do it on our own but we need to open our hearts to let the Spirit fill us.  Amen

Good teaching Keith,

I struggle with holding my tongue and I sometimes suffer the consequences for not doing so. I feel that when I do not practice what Christ preaches I will get in there and muck everything up. When I rely on him totally, things seem to go for the better. I think for many of us "Christians" that plank in our own eye keeps us from seeing the necessary change Christ requires. Funny how we can still see the splinter in someone else's though. I think that is why we all need to ask for help getting the plank out, it requires pain, it requires humility and relying on others. When we step aside from ourselves we get a true vision of the world and Christ. Thanks

J,

I agree with you completely. Funny how it's the truly hard times that tends to be the only way that we do stand aside and see what the world looks like. I know that I have fallen/do fall into that category at times, and I'm sure others out there do as well.

The world that we are a part of can be skeptical and slow to embrace Christ into their thoughts, let alone their lives. The unchurched also view Christians as people separate from themselves; a different type of person.
So, here's a question that may put more gasoline on the fire than water. How can we relate to others that don't know how to hold their tongues (seems to be a growing majority in America) without compromising the values that Jesus put forth, while tearing down the images that others have of Christian life? ("more pious, more proper, never swears, always nice, i.e. isn't human like me")

More simply put, how can you get someone who can't hold their tongue to pay you some attention while their "Christian" wall is up?

Kevin,

Great question and insight. I am a person that often speaks first then thinks second so self admittedly, I suffer from foot-in-mouth disease. There I admitted it...ha-ha.

To answer your question or to dive into it more I think there are several things and examples we can look to to learn how to deal with the "un-churched or churched loudmouth" for lack of better terms. First with the unchurched I think that we need to be the example and for the unchurched we need to be the example. I find that the more I study Gods word the more I feel disconnected with the modern church so how is I expect the nonbelievers to feel comfortable? We can't, we need to follow Christ's lead. I think the equation is simple, go, love, serve, love. serve them more, love them more and then when asked witness to how we do what we do. First action then talk. As you can tell we have been led astray which then has hindered our abilities to lead people through Christ. I feel that there is a revolution so to speak in the Church, enough talk, more action.

To summarize I think we need to love and serve, that is how we relate. Then God will give the opportunities to help us witness. I think of us (Christ followers) as a pair of scissors and Christ is the barber. Who cuts the hair, the barber with the scissors, yet he could use a knife or saw. Meaning we aren't the most important part, Christ is. Thanks for the question, I am not an expert by any means but love to be challenged to think about Christ more and more.
Respectfully,
Jeff

Sorry, I meant to say "First with the unchurched I think that we need to be the example and for the churched we need to be the example.

J,

I understand your point. Let me peel back the onion a little more. Am I detecting the division in the church, as you commented, of those in the church starting to act like the Pharisees and Sadducees in Jesus's time? And that this is what creates the division between the churched and unchurched?

To be honest, I want to be able to relate to those that aren't practicing. I want to be able to make them comfortable in their own environment so that I will have an easier time of introducing Christ to them, as you mentioned before, by example.

Serving and loving is an excellent way to be an example, but for those that are skeptical of someone serving or loving them, it becomes difficult to reach them in Christ, in my opinion. Are these the people that will just never find the narrow door? The optimist in me wants everyone to stand in the kingdom of heaven. Is this just an area where I should do as Jesus commands, and shake the dust from my sandles?

Side note - Thank you very much for the discussion. It allows me, as has been stated before by yourself and keith, to reach further into me and my belief. Actions like those only strengthen my bond with Jesus. Thanks for this.

I truly believe we as maturing followers of Christ just keep watering no matter what. When you are living it out truly you just shine. If people don't accept that, no matter, you just keep doing it Christ like. It is like wiping the dust off but there is no change in how we act or live.

Jeff shared with me a couple he know that just live it and you can tell by their life no matter what happens.

I think of Mother Teresa, she just lived and loved and if people did listen it didn't matter, what did was not forcing anything on anyone it was exemplifying Christ. Peace

Kevin,

Like you I sometimes feel like leaving them in the dust. But I think Christ only asks us to plant the seed. He grows it. Therefore that should be freeing to us, to know that the hard work for us is just going and doing what is asked of us. Don't be a force of division, be one of kindness and emulate Christ the best we can. I know it works best when I step out of the way and as John the Baptist did let the one greater than I do the saving. I really like your questions and I am by no means an expert, I struggle like everyone else but these blogs I read and participate in help grow myself and my Faith. I guess the key is participation. Thank you. God Bless

Jeff
