“And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.”
We can easily get caught up in our flesh and struggle to see that because of Jesus we can live above reproach. Peter is giving us a focus to have that will help us keep moving forward and bettering who we are in Christ. It says we can share in His Devine nature, that is because the Holy Spirit is in us and when we listen He shows us Jesus. Then we not only think it’s about being good or right, but letting God transform us, we can get away from our own desires. These are the things we should start to see in our lives that will help us think of Jesus instead of this world, which easily trips us up. 2 Peter chapter 1 verses 5-7 say, “In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.”
When we work on this we can see past what this world is showing us. We do what is right morally, we know because the Spirit in us tells us. The knowledge we need is knowing God’s word, the Bible, and living it out listening and hearing it. When we grow in Him we will grow in self control because we understand that we are different. In this world we will need patience endurance and self control, which will help us as we continue to die to self and live for Jesus. Godliness will come and we will think of others as better than ourselves and our love for people will grow. This seems hard but is easy when we let go or surrender our will for His. In Luke chapter 13 verses 24-27 Jesus tells us this; “Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail. When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But He will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ And He will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’”
Doing evil is not just being bad or scheming it’s not following Jesus. When we say we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior we are saying we are done with this world and the selfishness that comes with it. We work hard to understand and we let transformation happen. I say it a lot, we need to know Him, but He needs to know us, personally. Peter is telling us what will help us live in Jesus and His Devine nature and how to say no to this world. Look at 2 Peter chapter 1 verses 10-11, “So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
It will take work, hard work, but it is well worth it to hear well done good and faithful servant. Amen
