Colossians 3

Colossians 3:16-17 “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.  Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives.  Sing psalms and hymns of Spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.  And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

Could you imagine what this world would look like if we took Paul’s word from God and lived it out?  It is saying forget about what we would normally say or do and let the Spirit of God fill our lives so much that He speaks through us.  We are called to be different people after we accept Christ and we need to act like it.  Living the same way and acting the same way we did before Christ doesn’t make you a Christian.  Accepting Christ into your heart and knowing you have to change and then changing does.

Colossians chapter 3 verse 5 says, “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you.  Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, lust, and evil desires.  Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.”  The key to that verse is the phrase, “…have nothing to do with…”   It doesn’t mean sometimes or when I need a break or but I work hard and deserve these things, it means have nothing to do with them.

When we are filling our heart with the Spirit and learning there is nothing better in life than getting to know Jesus more, then we start to change and our heart feels the Spirit and we let Him lead instead of ourselves.  Verse 7 says, “You used to do these things when your life was still a part of this world.”  We are citizens of Heaven and we must remember what we are told in verse 11, “In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are Jew or Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free.  Christ is all that matters, and He lives in all of us.”

“Christ is all that matters.”  We need to open our hearts and know that we are “new” getting rid of what we did and being an example of what a Christian really is and that is someone who professes belief in and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ.  The keys are:  believers and followers, let’s be different so the world sees the difference.  Amen

Colossains 2:6-7 “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow Him.  Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him.  Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will over flow with thankfulness.”

When we call ourselves a follower of Christ we need to be doing just that.  It is no longer about us and what we deserve, it is about Jesus and us really getting to knowing Him.  It says, “…let your roots grow down into Him.”  That means we have to know Him and His character.  We need to study and seek who He is so that our faith will grow and we will have confidence as we live like Him.

Verse 10 says, “So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”  We should be different after we accept Christ and we should know that we are a new creation, one that lives to honor God.

Verse 12 says, “For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized.  And with Him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.”  We must realize this so we continually desire to learn from God and not from the world.  Our lives are the light that shines so people can know the Lord and we are to learn and help plant and water the truth so God will develop it and make it grow.  We cannot be complacent, we must be diligent and thankful that we have been set free of the world’s hold and now live following Christ.

Really look at verse 20 which says, “You have died with Christ, and He has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world…”  Let’s do everything we can to follow Christ fully, doing nothing that we want unless the Spirit shows us.  This total surrender is what Jesus did and we are called to do the same.  Forget what the world says about the American dream and live how God says in love.  Amen

Colossians 3:1 “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.”

You have to consider yourself new when you ask Christ into your life.  We are saying that we want to be different and not continue living the way we were.

Verse 2 says, “Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.”

This should be an entirely new concept for us.  We should stop when we are thinking of ourselves and focus on Christ.  We should slow down when we react and listen to the Spirit growing in our hearts.  This doesn’t happen over night or with one prayer, it is a constant feeding and learning, truly having a relationship with the Lord.

Verse 3 says, “For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”

So, I say, seek out all God wants and teaches.  Devote yourself to constant learning so the joy of heaven will fill you here on earth.  Then you can understand verse 4 which says, “And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the world, you will share in all His glory.”

We need to open our hearts to learn how Christ lived so we can be Christ like in our journey to be not of this world.  Amen

Colossians 1:6 “This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world.  It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.”

This just made me want to ask a simple question; has your lives changed since you first heard and understood the truth?  It is so important that we realize that we all need to change and focus on Christ.  We must remember that the world doesn’t change, we do or should.  If you are in the same spot spinning your wheels, ask for understanding from God.  Ask Him to open your heart and mind so you can grow and change.

Paul says in Philippians chapter 1 verse 25, “Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith.”

There is joy in having faith in Christ and with that comes change and development.  We learn to live as a light and we shine even in the crud of this world.  Look at the prayer Paul prays for the Colossians in chapter 1 verse 9, “So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you.  We ask God to give you complete knowledge of His will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.”

It didn’t say we heard about your love so we didn’t need to keep praying about you. We are all in this together working hard to constantly be a light.  Look how incredible verse 10 is, “Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit.  All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.”

Our growth never ends, I love that it says “…you learn to know God better and better.”  How are you doing knowing God?  Is it only at church on the weekend, or maybe a couple days during the week you can fit in to your busy schedule?  I say learn to know Him daily asking, seeking and knocking to be full of the Spirit so you  can have a fruitful life of true joy.  Amen

Colossians 1:19-21 “For God in all His fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through Him God reconciled everything to Himself.  He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.  This includes you who were once away from God.  You were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts, and actions.”

I love this, it is talking to me.  When I accepted Christ I made a change, has your life changed?  This world can make us struggle in so many ways, what are we filling our minds and hearts with?  Because of Christ and what He did we need to fill our thoughts and actions with light and learn form the Lord.  We should be able to feel how amazing He is by opening God’s word and learning how to live.  What are we seeking or who do we turn to when we need answers?

In Isaiah 45:19 it says, “I publicly proclaim bold promises.  I do not whisper obscurities in some dark corner.  I would not have told the people of Israel to seek me if I could not be found.  I, the Lord, speak only what is true and declare only what is right.”

We need to seek wisdom and live what we learn; it is our actions that will help people change.  When we struggle we need to turn to the Lord and pray.  Nothing we can do or buy or touch can help us feel His power and make us understand.  Think about what it says in Colossians chapter 2 verse 3, “In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”  Amen
