“Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to Him.” The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. “Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” He said. “Don’t be afraid.” And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus. As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
This story is amazing to me and really helps me grab onto the fact that my life is for me to be planting and watering. I am called to go into the world and make disciples, teach, and baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This does not mean I am responsible for the growth of anyone. People have to choose that they want to grow and seek Him, that is why our walk is personal. Peter after being with Jesus for many years is brought to see an amazing sight, Jesus’ transfiguration, and with that boldly says, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials —one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Then he even hears God say, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to Him.” And he still goes on and denies three times that he even knows Jesus.
Look at Matthew chapter 26 verses 69-75, “Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.” But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth. ” Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said. A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.” Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.”
Don’t get caught up in when people have their moment, pray and care for them, then love them with challenge and truth. Their transformation will come as they choose to know Him and be known by Him. It took Jesus resurrecting before Peter truly understand what he needed to do. Growth is essential and is good at all stages but we can never be satisfied, we must always seek growth so we can make a difference with our planting and watering. Amen
