1 Timothy 6

1 Timothy 6:11-12 “But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things.  Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.  Fight the good fight for the true faith.  Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses.”

It is so important for us to run from what the world wants us to do.  The devil will try over and over to keep us spinning our wheels in the crap of this world; we can’t get caught up in those things.  It is our responsibility to continue to grow and develop our faith daily and be on guard of the things of this world.

Look at Paul’s last statement to Timothy in this chapter.  “Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you.  Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge.  Some people have wandered from their faith by following such foolishness.  May God’s grace be with you all.”

We must know that God wants us to love Him and love others.  Our focus should be making a difference by being a light not arguing about things that only matter if we are listening to this world.  We can’t wander from what we know and we must keep our eyes on the prize, Jesus Christ, and be aware of all satan’s trickery.  As believers of Jesus it is not impossible for us to be deceived by false teaching and worldly temptations; that is why it is so important for us to constantly be seeking God’s wisdom.

Hebrews chapter 4 verse 12 says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful.  It is sharper than the sharpest two-edge sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.  It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”  We must study His word, learn to live it and let it pierce our hearts so we desire true change.  Then we will continue to do what we are called to do as we pursue Christ and glorifying God.  Amen

1 Timothy 1:19 “Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear.  For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result their faith has been ship wrecked.”

Paul is talking to Timothy and letting him know his responsibility to grow and develop his faith.  We must work on our heart and making a change from non-believer to new believer and from new believer to mature follower of Christ.  We can’t just be Christians, it doesn’t mean anything if we are not learning and maturing to be Christ-like.  Christian is a word that means something.  It means we believe in Jesus Christ and we desire to be like Him in our behavior.

Look at what Paul says in Romans chapter 2 verses 28-29, “For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision.  No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God.  And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God’s Spirit.  And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God not from people.”

This is exactly what has to happen to be a Christian also.  We have got to have a changed heart that we fill with God’s Spirit and we must long for praise from God, like wanting to hear “well done good and faithful servant.”  We are loved and that is why it is so important for us to understand what God says about us and make a difference in the world, shining for people to see that we are Christians.  Amen

1 Timothy 4:16 “Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching.  Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.”

This is a message Paul is giving to Timothy who is a young believer that Paul is pouring into to teach and lead people to Christ.  What I like about this is you see Paul tell Timothy to “stay true to what is right…”  That is the Good News about Jesus; we can’t stretch it or make it what we want it to be.  We must be true to what it is saying and make sure we are turning to God for all understanding.  When it gets tough and it is easier to live for the world we need to dive in to His word and prayer even more.  Paul finishes verse 16 with, “…for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.”  Timothy is already a believer why would he have to worry about what he is doing or how he is living?  This is why it is so important to surrender to the Lord and live a way that resembles Christ.  We can never be satisfied with just believing or that we said a prayer.  Our walk must be one of devotion and constant learning, seeking God for all our wisdom.  When we take our eyes off of Him we don’t move and we struggle.

In verse 8 Paul says, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

We must train ourselves everyday so we are firm in our walk and always moving forward toward Him.  Amen
